detailed opening sequence analysis

title sequence analysis

These are some of the some examples that I have been looking at for opening titles for my film as part of g321.i like the jaws one because it’s very simplistic using simple fades and the iconic music identified with the shark about to attack someone. The music appears as the shot goes to and underwater tilt this is used as it is trying to replicate a shark swimming thought the water, it gives a very important feel to the story straight away. The main jaws title is very bold and thick and grabs the viewer’s attention it is a very unique font that the viewers can only identify with this film. The credits are very big and bold and I think this fits the whole theme of the film. At the start the credits include the universal studios logo as it’s the producer of the films. I also choose the psycho opening titles of 1960. I like in the into that it is constantly moving and it uses an interesting transition methods and colours that I think could be related to the theme of the film. The font is very straight and the font size is small that could be linked to a psycho theme with a black background there is also included the paramount logo to show that that is where the film was made the intro also includes very fast strange music that I think relates to the them very well and in some ways sets the tone of the film.

institutional research

audience profile

The audience I am trying to target with my film will be.

Who likes watching films a lot and has an interest in different styles on the horror genre and likes watching films a 4+ times a month. I have seen from research I have done into film and people that I have asked that people that are interested in film of all different genres watch a lot of different types of there interested genre

Mainly an age range of 15-17 or 18-25 where the ages that answered the survey more than other age ranges this could suggest that they have the time to answer surveys about film and they have the knowledge about film to answer it. The range that I have decided upon seems to be acceptable with the backing of the research I have done into ratings of films and what types of content in films increase the rating with violence being a common feature that increases ratings on film. I have the age rating at 15+ because the my film contains to features of violence or any adult content because I feel it does not require that to be a great horror film and that if we just include the elements people like such as shocks and a fitting storyline people will like it more that regular films. My improvement question to horror films in the survey suggests this that people want more storyline and better suspence

Mainly male because my surveys suggest that they could be more interested in the horror genre than other types of film genres. Where this cant be really tested I believe that because more males have anwered the survey than females and I have a much higher result for horror than any other genre listed that I must be down to more males liking that certain genre.

A student mainly in college/university or in work I believe this is the right employment target to aim for because this group may have more time to spend watching films especially if they are doing courses to do with film or media. Also my survey results show that more students have answered the survey than a person in full time employment this could suggest this.

A person that is interested at a wide range of horror elements such as suspence , shocks and storyline all of these elements seemed popular with the people who answered the survey.

audience research survey findings

inspirational / creative opening sequences

Olympus has fallen –

It starts of in a snowy Christmas time forest scene where the camera tilts upwards over a forest covered in snow in America this sets the scene as it happened right at the start you get a scence of Christmas time but the way it is shot is very realistic and leaves room for what is about to happen. Olympus is fallen titles appear in this scene with a kind of a musical tune

The next scene is a secret service officer dressed in black opens a door leading to where the president is with the first lady you see even more of a Christmas feel as there are decorations in the room and there is a very golden light filling the room making it look very inviting and homely. The president and other secret service agents are dressed in suits which suggest that there is some sort of meeting or dinner they are attending. There is a wide shot of outside that shows ‘the beast’ lining up along other presidential cars this shows the scale and size of moving potus. We see the outside of camp David residence which sets the scene further, the house is all lit up. There is no music but are real sounds like car engines. The next scene is in ‘the beast’ with potus and the first lady this is meant to show the president has he is traveling and what he is saying and how he feels about the upcoming dinner. There is a very dim light and there is only them speaking in the car very softly I think it gives a scence of security for the viewer. There is blinking lights behind to show the presidential travel vehicles there is hardly any image out of the windows because the travel is at night there is some mid shots of the car to continue the scence of travel in the snowy forest

Batman –

The opening scene to the dark night rises is a carm start where you see what look to be prisoners getting told to get one thing plane that is there then the plan is in the air it crosses vast amounts of forest land this scene is an establishing shot because it gives you an full idea of where the plane is , in the middle of nowhere leaving plenty of ideas open as to where of what is going on the colour of the sky seems to suggest the mood of the scenes that are about to happen this also could suggest the genre for the film . There is scenes in the plane that show a lot of movement there is a lot of camera witching in the plane due to the small filming area and the amount of actors that have to be in the shot at one time there is a few close ups on the main character.

as he hears a muffled but strong sound and is wondering why one of the characters is speaking in that way which suggests that the main evil character of the story is on the plane with them and that something is about to happen to the people of who that plane is controlled by.  This leads to one of the most famous scenes of the whole entire film where the evil character is revealed, the camera shot on this is a mid- shot which allows the viewer to see up close the persons head as the black hood is removed the face is revealed and the viewers see the iconic masked villain and head the very strange high pitched unusual voice that this mask creates. The characters seem shocked as this was the man they have been looking for but did not expect to see him is this way and even at this time. There are a few wide  shots in the plane that show the situation in side and what everybody is doing and how they are reacting to the situation. There is another wide angled shot from above the plane as it is flying over this shot and angle suggests straight away that the plane might not be alone in the air and that something is about to happen this is further emphasized by noises of another plane and then a bigger white plane is shown in the shot following above. There is further tension and dialoged between the two main characters in the plane mainly mid shots. There is a low wide shot from the higher plane where there are people that jump down on to the main plane. There is another mid shot, shot across the side of the plane showing people smashing the planes windows and attaching the plane to ropes. As the plane is tipped up by the higher plane they are another wide shot showing the plane’s wings being snapped off and the plane being put in a vertical position then there is famous shot here where the main evil character in the plan is stood on the seats at the top of the plane looking down at this point the back of the plain is blow off the camera angle where is a mid shot looking at the back of the plane. Mid and close up shots follow where the main character holds another person and then there is a high shot looking down at the two characters where by the plane it drops out of the air. The scene ends where you see a wide shot of the two characters being dragged by the higher plane.

James bond – golden eye opening scene -

The opening scene starts with a plane appearing in the shot and then there is a panning zoom shot by the camera man following the plane over the Hoover dam which is directly opposite the camera shot the way in which the camera follows the plane suggests that the camera is mounted on a helicopter of some sort of flying vehicle because the position of the camera gets higher as the plane fly’s over the dam wall. after it is over the wall the camera starts to tilt towards the top of the dam wall the camera tilts as the camera plane gets closer to the dam wall suggesting there is going to be something happening there this shot cuts into a shot of a mid shot of a gate on the dam top opening the camera is pointed looking across the floor watching a man run in and across the dam top. There is an establishing panning shot looking down at the dam top watching the man run to the middle of the wall. There is three close up shots where he drops the rope on the path and then where he hooks the clip to the metal fence and where he attaches the rope clip to his boot all show the actions of the man but not him in the shot. There is a wide shot here where the camera is located at the bottom of the dam wall and quickly tilts up right to the top showing the height of the wall. The is a tilt high shot from above the man as he is about to jump over the wall. There is a follow tilting shot from the camera following the man as he descends down the wall. The scene as the man shoots a gun at the floor of the dam and starts to wheel the cable in. the angle for the camera here is a low high angled shot at him.

the brief g321

The brief that I have been provided with consists of two tasks that I have to complete in g321

Preliminary exercise- this is a task that involves filming and editing a actor under taking a few simple moves such as opening a door and moving across/around a room and sitting down on a chair  the film must be scripted to include a simple exchange of dialogue the film will consist of many camera movements that follow the 180-degree rule.

Main task- the film length is two minutes so features such as titles and credits should fit with in that time period

Video and sound sources should be student made with a exemption on sound fx witch should be copyright free. All tasks should be done individually or maximum group of 4

adding sound to batman opening sequence

I really enjoyed this task. Using garage band sound effects to adapt the opening scenes in the batman the dark night. First I looked and listened to the original film clip to get ideas and to also understand the types of elements included in this sequence. I enjoyed being able to use different effects to fit to certain parts and elements in the film e.g. explosions and gun shots. I used the iMac using garage band to form a timeline that links with the video, I found it easy to find effects and instrument sounds and to place and edit them in the timeline window. I found it challenging but fun being able to match what was happening in the opening of the film to a timeline of sounds that I had chosen and cut. I believe I was able to complete a timeline that covered allot of the film opening with sound that I believe fitted and after watching it back I found out that I had made good judgements on most sounds I had used. What I found to be the trickiest parts of the task where the timings and getting the correct sound clip at the right time so that it would correspond correctly with the film clip I feel should have imported the film clip in to the garage band timeline so it could have been perfectly lined up with the sounds I had chosen this would have allowed me to focus on just the garage band application instead of flicking between windows. Overall I believe the sounds I had chosen where good for the film i was doing and the sound of the film I wanted to get across and I believe it fit with the different elements that where taking place within the film I did try to recreate some of the sounds from the original film music from the sounds I had available as I felt these where needed to make the film and music still seem realistic even with different types of sounds. I am really pleased with what I was able to achieve on garage band on this task.

adding sound to my video

I believe this task went well because my group had planned out what we where going to film and what type of effect we where going for. we decided to shoot our short film in the library and that we would start at one end and record until we got to the other. our idea was to make it a every spooky scene so we added a mysterious sound effect to the video. as a group we had a listen to many different sound effects from a lot of different instruments on the garage band software and we started to develop different mixes to the video. all three of our different mixes made the video feel different. I feel that we all created audio mixes that when linked with the video worked well in emphasising the mood we where trying to get across. I feel that we could have tried to develop a range of the groups ideas into one sound mix that we could have worked on to fit different stages along the video. I thought our ability to create different musical sequences to the video worked well and I was happy with end mix I thought it amplified what we where trying to get across in the video.

history of thriller

Early thriller movies appeared in the start of the 1920’s with Alfred hichcocks’s first thrillers such as the lodger in 1926 witch was wrote on the shocking jack ripper story. More films followed such as blackmail in 1929. During the period from 1925 and 1935 6 films where made relating to the thriller genre. Spy films where introduced in 1928 with films such as fritz langs spies that was about criminal spy characters and action in the film these kind of films allowed and opened the floor for the james bond movies we see now that use very similar designs to the first creations of this type of film. Fritz lang went on to create more films based on and about serial killers and criminal actions involving preying on children witch are quite rare in todays thriller movies. other british directors followed such as walter forde , victor saville and George a cooper all in the same period of time created there own version of thriller movies and they made on average 6 movies each with some making nine. While hitchcocks films seemed to follow purpose and a britsh trend because of his patch in to making suspence type film witch include films such as the man who new so much  in 1934 he was one of the first dirctors to put in a film many different types of genre and some how link them into one story. In the 1940’s Hitchcock went on to create more films even picking up an award for his 1940 film Rebecca there where films every year the 50s all following the same style of film and basing it on certain non fictional storys and also fictional and creative ideas and designs. The 1950/60’s showed the more glamious side to the films where the movies included many famous stars and it was the first time the movies where shot in technicolour witch in a sence re invented the way in whitch directors produced the films. Stars like Marilyn Monroe and henry Hathaway, ralph meeker where all involved in making thrill movies in the 50’s. it was the 70’s and 80’s that saw the up step up in the making of these movies introducing more adult content compared to the soft detective work in past movies, violence and explicit materials where used in films like frenzy in 1972 and duel in 1971. 90’s saw rob reiners misery that was based on a book introducing spy and conspiracys into the story line of thrillers. Modern day thrillers have come a long way from the early day types this has been possible because over the years directors have been willing to try new things and experiment with different layouts and storys. Thriller movies have introduced stars of today like jude law and tom cruise and even to day is a very popular genre that includes gore, violence ,brutality ,terror and shock and keeping the viewer tence. Todays thrillers use a variety of elements and vairious people to create shock and action. Directors use lots of special effects such as diffrent6 camera angles and cameras. Pryrotechnics and other explosion and fire effects and also computer generateted effects.
